The 3.6 acre state of the art stainless steel structure designed by Frank Gehry is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The concert hall, opened on October 23, 2003, provides both the visual and aural intimacy for a world class musical experience.
The project, launched in 1992 stalled from 1994 to 1996 due to a lack of funding. It was then decided to take Gehery’s design which originally called for stone and create the building with a less costly stainless steel skin. Prime Metals provided the material (Mako DOH) used throughout the exterior of the building.
After the building was constructed the founders room unlike the matte finish on the rest of the building was made with a highly polished mirror like stainless steel. The caused a problem with residents across the street. The structure focused the signs light into some of the condominiums making their air conditioning bills to skyrocket. Due to the flexibility of the materials used, the solution was a simple light sanding of the panels to reduce the unwanted glare
